ABS and Plastic Vacuum Forming
Technical and Industrial Plastic Part Production with Vacuum Thermoforming Technology
ABS and plastic vacuum forming is the process of softening thermoplastic sheets under controlled heat and shaping them over a mould with the help of vacuum. This method is widely used in many industries, including automotive, packaging, technical plastic products, suitcase components, kitchen drawer organizers, underfloor heating systems and prototype production.
No silicone membrane is used in this application. The sheet material is heated directly until it becomes soft enough to form, and then the vacuum system pulls the material over the mould surface to achieve the desired shape. For this reason, the process depends on the correct control of heat, mould design and vacuum performance.
MakserTeam vacuum thermoforming machines offer a practical, repeatable and professional production solution for manufacturers who work with different mould forms and various plastic sheet materials. Product geometry, sheet thickness, mould height and target production capacity should be evaluated together in order to select the most suitable machine configuration.
Suitable Materials
The material used in vacuum thermoforming should be selected according to the final product’s application area, required impact resistance, surface quality, temperature behaviour and mould detail.
The following materials are commonly used in plastic vacuum forming applications:
- ABS sheet
- PET-G sheet
- PMMA / acrylic sheet
- PVC sheet
- PS sheet
- PP sheet
- PC sheet
- PVC-U
- HDPE
- PC-ABS
- Thermoplastic plastic sheets
- EPS / XPS based underfloor heating panel applications
Note: Each plastic material has different heat behaviour, softening temperature and forming capability. Therefore, material thickness, mould depth and product form should be evaluated together before production.
How Does Plastic Vacuum Forming Work?
The production process starts with the preparation of a suitable mould for the product to be formed. Depending on the product geometry, material thickness and production quantity, the mould can be made from MDF, aluminium or other suitable mould materials.
The thermoplastic sheet is placed into the machine and softened in a controlled way by the heating system. Once the material reaches the correct forming temperature, the vacuum system is activated. The vacuum pulls the softened sheet towards the mould surface and allows the material to take the details of the mould.
After cooling is completed, the formed plastic part is removed from the mould. If required, the product is then finished with edge cutting, drilling, trimming or assembly operations.

- Cleaner and more consistent forming results for technical plastic parts
- Possibility to develop machine, material and sector-based solutions according to manufacturer requirements
Which MakserTeam Model Is Suitable?
The main solution for ABS and plastic vacuum forming applications is the MakserTeam Vacuum Thermoforming machine range. Unlike WP Series vacuum membrane presses, this application does not use a silicone membrane. Instead, the heated plastic sheet is pulled directly over the mould by vacuum.
For this reason, WP1, WP2 and WP4 models should not be positioned as the main solution on the plastic vacuum forming application page. The WP Series should mainly be positioned for PVC/PET foil lamination, natural wood veneer pressing and wood bending applications with silicone membrane.
For acrylic and solid surface forming applications, the Heat Shape Master model should be highlighted separately due to its lower oven structure. For ABS and technical plastic part production, the correct positioning is the Vacuum Thermoforming machine range.
